THE
Boss Tom
Competition
Contest Rules
Competition Registration:
You must register for the Boss Tom Competition on or before April 12th by visiting the Login/Register tab. Arrangements for payments will be made after you register. Payment must be made during the month of April. If you sign up and don’t pay, you will not be allowed to participate in the current or future Boss Tom competitions. Each contestant can only register one time!
Entry Fee and Prizes:
There will be a $10 entry fee for all contestants. There will be two divisions; a combined division and a youth division (under the age of 18). The youth division will have a $20 prize for the highest scoring bird shot by a youth hunter. Youth hunters are still eligible for the combined division prize as well! The combined division winner wins the rest of the money in the pot and the traveling Boss Tom trophy. In the event of a tie, the pot will be split among those tied and the trophy will travel to multiple places if desired.
Bird Score Overview:
Weight: 1 pt. per pound (23 pounds, 6 oz. = 23.375 pts.)
Longest Beard Length: 1 pt. per inch (10 5/8 inches = 10.625 pts.)
Additional Beards: 1 pt. per inch (6 3/4 inches = 6.75 pts.)
Spurs: 1 pt. per inch (2 1/8 combined inches = 2.125 pts.)
Method: 1 pt. for Firearm OR 2 pts. for Bow/Crossbow
Before you begin to score your turkey, be sure to note that weight measurements are to be taken in 1/16 pound increments, and beard and spur measurements are to be taken in 1/8 inch increments. Both are then converted to decimal form. A conversion chart for measurements is located toward the bottom of this page. A witness must verify all measurements. After your bird has been scored, contact Scott Johnson and report the measurements and score.
Scoring Your Bird:
Step 1:
Weigh your bird in pounds and ounces and convert ounces to decimal form.
Step 2:
Measure the beard length (beard must be measured from the center point of the protrusion of the skin to the tip of the longest bristle) and convert it to decimal form.
If you have an atypical bird (multiple beards), score 1 bonus point per additional inch on each additional beard.
Step 3:
Measure both spurs (each spur must be measured along the outside center from the point at which the spur protrudes from the scaled leg skin to the tip of the spur, see diagram on the bottom of page), add them together, and convert the combined measurement to decimal form.
Step 4:
If you shot the bird with a firearm, score 1 point. If you shot the bird with a bow/crossbow, score 2 points.
Step 5:
Add together the points for the weight, the points for the beard(s), the points for the spurs, and the points for the method of harvest. This is the score you will receive for your turkey.
Good Luck and Safe Hunting!
